Galerie Mladých, TIC / Mikuláš Zimula

Historical narratives do not emerge simply through the discovery and identification of material remains, but through their selection, interpretation and social acceptance. Equally telling is the museum's authority as a quintessential ideological institution, endowed with the power to shape and legitimise historical interpretation and the values projected onto it. These are precisely the mechanisms that Ancient Girl Starter Pack satirises and reimagines.
Here, the surviving relics take the form of jewellery and clothing, presented as evidence of an unknown ancient civilisation. Mikuláš Zimula constructs this fictional society as one founded upon queer culture, extravagance and excess, whose existence has been erased from official history because it supposedly conflicts with dominant norms. Its rediscovery raises the question of who decides — and under what conditions — which histories deserve to be preserved within collective memory.
The artist employs the strategy of parafiction, creating situations that blur the boundary between reality and fiction while temporarily adopting the language of institutional authority. The installation combines the aesthetics of a natural history museum, an archaeological excavation and contemporary pop-cultural references. Metal display cases contain objects that resemble both archaeological artefacts and contemporary fashion accessories: acrylic nails, oxidised aluminium grillz and platform shoes carved from sandstone reference the aesthetics of extreme beauty while simultaneously challenging the hierarchy of what is considered historically significant.
Elements of cyberpunk are present throughout Zimula's practice. Following the logic that a socially more progressive civilisation can only be situated in the past, the artist develops José Esteban Muñoz's concept of queer futurity — not as a simple vision of future liberation, but as a mode of imagination and desire for a different world that does not yet exist, though it already reveals itself through art, performance and everyday acts of resistance.
